Amethyst is a beautiful purple stone that represents the birth month of February and the zodiac sign Aquarius. Ranging from lilac to a deep purple, the stone is said to be associated with the Greek god Dionysus due to it’s wine-like color.

Alexandrite is the second birthstone of June and it comes in shades of blue, green, red, and purple. This stone changes color in different light and is sometimes described as “emerald by day, ruby by night.”

Ruby is a beautiful stone that is seen in red, maroon, and pink tones. This stone is the birthstone for July and the zodiac sign Cancer. With it’s name coming from the Latin word ruber, meaning red, ruby stones stand as a symbol for love and passion and were often thought to keep warriors safe in battle. Ruby is also used to celebrate the 40th Wedding Anniversary.

The birthstone for August and the zodiac sign Leo is peridot. This lovely stone is formed by magma in the upper mantle and is brought to the surface through further volcanic activity and the shifting of tectonic plates. Peridot was often mistaken for emerald or topaz. Some historians believe that Cleopatra’s famed emerald collection may have actually been peridot.

As the traditional symbol for nobility, sincerity, and faithfulness, sapphire is the birthstone for September and the zodiac sign Virgo. Sapphire stones were worn in Greece and Rome by the elite to protect them from harm and envy. They were also worn in the Middle Ages to specifically symbolise heaven and the Ancient Persians believed a giant sapphire held up the world and made the sky blue. Sapphire is also used to celebrate the 45th Wedding Anniversary!

Opal is one of the two birthstones for October and the zodiac sign Libra. This lovely stone is filled with vibrant color and was once believed by the Bedouin tribe to have been filled with lightning. It is no surprise that the Ancient Greeks believed this stone had the gift of prophecy and protection.

Tourmaline is another one of the two birthstones for October and the zodiac sign Libra. Famously mistaken for emerald or ruby, tourmaline stones are found in many different colors. Pink tourmaline is said to attract compassion while green tourmaline promotes stamina.

Topaz is the birthstone for November and the zodiac sign Scorpio. Topaz is found in almost every color and is often thought to have a calming energy. It was believed among many Europeans from the 1300s to the 1600s that topaz could prevent magic spells and repel sadness and rage.

Turquoise is one of the two birthstones for the month of December and the zodiac sign Sagittarius. This stone is commonly seen in blue and occasionally blueish-green. Turquoise stones have played a large part in many cultures including those from Egypt, China, India, Native American tribes, Tibet, and Europe.

Zircon is one of the other two birthstones for December and the zodiac sign Sagittarius. This stone comes in a variety of colors and is believed to ward off evil spirits and was used to treat insomnia.
